Following the defeat at Pharsalus (48 B.C.) and the assassination of Pompey the Great in Egypt, his sons, Gnaeus and Sextus, joined the republicans in Africa, fighting alongside Metellus Scipio and Cato at Thapsus (46 BC). Defeated once again, they fled to Hispania, where they formed an army that was defeated by Caesar at Munda (March 17, 45 BC). Shortly after, Gnaeus was captured and killed by the Caesarians (April 12), while Sextus continued the fight. This denarius exemplifies the coinage issued by the Pompeians in Hispania to finance their military army. Minted by the proquestor Marcus Minatius Sabinus, the obverse features the portrait of the late Pompey the Great, while the reverse depicts the support of the Hispanic cities for the cause they championed.
