Magnificent denarius from the period known as the Social War, or more precisely, the War of Rome's Allies (Socii), which unfolded between 91 and 88 BC. These towns grew discontent with the treatment they received from Rome and demanded full citizenship. As their appeals were repeatedly denied, they broke their alliance with Rome and forged a new state coalition called Liga, known as Italia, with Corfinium as its capital. This became the seat of their Senate, where they minted numerous coins inspired by Roman denarii. This particular denarius showcases the head of Italia, in this case bearing a legend that identifies it with Oscan characters, while the reverse features a soldier trampling a Roman standard alongside a reclining bull, the symbol of the Samnites
