This anonymous Marinid dinar, attributed to Abu al-Hasan Ali (731-752 H/1331-1352 AD) and minted in the Fez mint, is part of a series of issues made in Fez, Tlemcen, Sijilmasa and Salé, which are related to the Tarifa campaign in the final years of the Battle of the Strait (1274-1350). Abu al-Hasan is the Merinid key player in this last phase, with several successive campaigns (1331, 1332, 1333, 1338 and 1340) culminating in the Battle of Río Salado.
All these issues must have taken place after the end of the truce with Castile in 1331. This is evidenced by the presence of the Nasrid motto “And there is no victor but God” on the fourth line of the obverse, which helps to provide insight into their timeframe, estimade to be between 1331 and 1340.
During the final years of the Battle of the Strait (1274-1350), the Marinid mints of Fez, Tlemcen, Sijilmasa and Salé minted a series of anonymous issues with the Nasrid motto "And there is no victor but God" inscribed on their reverse. These coins are attributed to Abu al-Hasan Ali (731-752 H/1331-1352), who led several campaigns in the Iberian Peninsula (1331, 1332, 1333, 1338 and 1340), culminating in the Battle of Río Salado (1340). It is within this chronological context (1331-1340) of warfare that these issues are placed, explaining the presence of the Nasrid motto on them.
